Exploratory BI
Overview
Exploratory BI (EBI) is a fundamental enabler of enterprise strategy. Starting the intelligence process with a blank pad, EBI uses techniques developed over several generations of BI and statistical methodologies to support the strategy-building process.
Exploratory BI projects rely heavily on graphics, visualization, statistical analysis, and basic data distribution methods. Making few early-on assumptions of expected findings, EBI analysts work closely with the business to "troll" enterprise data for linkages that can become the basis for strategic thinking. An EBI approach is often a first step in the conceptualization and development of a comprehensive or "smart" performance management process.
Technology
A variety of OSBI and proprietary technologies can be used for EBI. Since data must often be “munged” prior to analysis, we find the open source, agile languages such as Python and Ruby to be excellent choices for this dynamic work. R and Weka are leading OS technologies for data mining, statistical analysis, graphics and visualization. They are our tools of choice for EBI. SAS, S-Plus, SPSS and other proprietary stats/graphics packages can also be used.
