ABSTRACT
With shrinking IT budgets and demand for richer integration, organizations are taking a fresh look at the power of open source business intelligence platforms. Backed by commercial businesses and a community-based development model, OSBI packages now offer the same core BI functionality as their proprietary brethren at significantly lower cost.
This session will review two cases. The first case study presents a BI dashboard application powered by the Pentaho platform. The app leverages a cloud computing infrastructure for low TCO and virtually unlimited scalability. Enabling the web-based dashboard are an open source database, open source ETL, and an open source OLAP engine, delivering web-based, drillable access to sales data. This section will review the architecture, tools and components behind the OSBI application. The second case will demonstrate how to extend the core query, reporting and analysis capabilities of the Pentaho and Jaspersoft OSBI platforms with the advanced analytical modeling and statistical graphing capabilities of the open source standard R Project for Statistical Computing. Modern BI/DW implementations demand more sophisticated means to analyze and display information. With over 1.5 million worldwide users, R’s vibrant and extensive library of statistical modeling/machine learning methods and advanced statistical graphics significantly expands the core capabilities of Pentaho and Jaspersoft. Examples will be shown with a review of the integration architecture.

Webinar - B-Eye-Network Webinar: Open Source Business Intelligence: Is it real? Is it compelling? Is it for you?
Recorded on October 17, 2006
The presence and popularity of open source technologies is now established. Media outlets both inside and outside the technology industry regularly publish open source (OS) articles. Venture capital firms are looking for the next Red Hat. OS software download sites are experiencing increased volume, and the number of worldwide OS development projects expands daily. However, to date, open source’s chronicled success has primarily focused on the technology infrastructure of IT systems – replacing operating systems, application servers and databases.
Open source business intelligence (OSBI) represents one of the first legitimate OS moves up the software stack into business application platforms. This Web seminar will help you understand why OSBI is an immediate, compelling alternative to traditional BI and will examine the state of the OSBI technology market and demonstrate how enterprise class BI applications can be implemented today. Specifically, you will learn:
- What OSBI technologies exist today
- How they are being used to provide performance measurement and operational intelligence
- The economics of OSBI vs. proprietary BI
- Who is leading adoption and why
Speakers:
- Colin White Founder, BI Research
- Steve Miller Co-Founder & President, OpenBI, LLC
- Richard Daley CEO, Pentaho
- Dave Reinke Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer, OpenBI, LLC
